An Estimated 25,000 Hard-Working Oklahomans

The Economics of Remington Park

The Facts:

In 30 months, Remington Park has invested more than:

  • $40 million in capital improvements on Zoo Trust Land;
  • $33 million in compensation for 500 employees;
  • $19 million to Oklahoma’s educational system;
  • $37 million for the Oklahoma horse industry (in the form of purses and awards for horse breeders and owners).
  • Remington Park’s gaming revenues have raised racing and breeding awards, attracting racing fans and job-intensive racing and breeding operations from other states, spurring  economic growth through purchases of land, facilities, supplies, room nights, meals and discretionary spending.
  • Remington Park is locally operated and managed, and since 2005 has contributed tens of millions of dollars to the community and to Oklahoma schools, as required by state law.
  • Remington Park supports the Oklahoma horse industry, which provides full-time employment to 51,500 Oklahomans.
  • The Oklahoma horse industry generates $3.3 billion for the state’s economy annually, $762 million of which is in the form of direct contribution.

The Impact:
Remington Park would face immediate shortfalls in revenue if it is forced to compete against a tribal casino in such close proximity and where so many of the operational rules (i.e., the maximum number of permitted machines, types of gaming permitted, hours of operation) favor the competition. As a result, this development would devastate Oklahoma horsemen and cause thousands of people to lose their jobs.

Remington Park would likely be forced to close soon after the proposed tribal casino opened its doors.

The economic benefits being touted by the tribe are exaggerated and would be more than offset by Remington Park’s demise and the negative ripple effect that would be felt by Oklahoma’s agricultural industry.
